Updates for Reason and ReCycle

The good people at Propellerheads have been busy working on Reason and ReCycle to make them better for you. Recently, they’ve released updates for both. Reason 6.0.2 fixes a couple of bug reports and performance issues. It is recommended for all users of Reason 6. You can download it from their website.

Please note, if you store your ReFills in the Reason program folder (not recommended), you’ll want to back them up or move them prior to upgrading.

ReCycle 2.2.1 sports an all new interface, 64bit support, Mac OS X Lion support, and a couple extra bonus features like Rex files created in 2.2.1 will now contain tempo meta data for use with Reason’s time stretch feature.

Melodyne Awarded Technical Grammy

At this year’s 54th annual Grammy Awards, the nod for Technical Grammy goes to Celemony’s Melodyne editing software.

Since its release more than a decade ago, Melodyne, has become an invaluable tool for studio professionals, gaining recognition as one of the most powerful and unique audio editors available. And PreSonus Studio One software is the only digital audio workstation software to fully and seamlessly integrate Melodyne into the program.

Producer and songwriter A.R. Rahman has called Melodyne a milestone in audio processing, saying, “Melodyne has completely changed how I record music. With Melodyne one can seamlessly correct out-of-tune notes in a piano track, change the chords in a harmonic accompaniment after it’s been recorded, or manipulate the timing within notes. The creation of music is enriched by this technology.”

PreSonus Studio One integrates Melodyne so tightly that it becomes essentially part of the program. Melodyne’s editing window opens within Studio One, and edits created in Melodyne can be immediately auditioned within Studio One, without cumbersome porting of files between the two programs.

“PreSonus has long recognized the unparalleled power Melodyne brings to audio editing, and we knew early on that integrating it into Studio One was a big part of creating the next generation of DAW software,” said Jim Odom, PreSonus co-founder, President and Chief Strategy Officer. “We’re truly excited that the Recording Academy has recognized Celemony with this tremendous award, and we’re proud to be associated with such an innovative team.”

PreSonus Announces Monitor Mix Control via iPhone/iPod touch

Up to 10 musicians can simultaneously control their StudioLive monitor mixes using an iPhone® or iPod touch® and PreSonus’ free QMix™ app. QMix builds on PreSonus’ original Virtual StudioLive (VSL), which provides bidirectional computer control of PreSonus StudioLive™-series mixers via FireWire. Next came StudioLive Remote for iPad®, which provides wireless control of StudioLive mixers.

“SL Remote is very useful for the front-of-house engineer but it’s overkill for onstage performers, and the cost of iPads can add up. That’s why we created QMix,” noted PreSonus Chief Technology Officer Bob Tudor. “The iPhone and iPod touch offer enough screen real estate to comfortably manage an aux mix, yet are relatively inexpensive and ultra-portable. QMix is designed for musicians and can be used in parallel with an engineer running StudioLive Remote from an iPad.”

QMix works by networking one or more iPhones wirelessly with a Mac® or PC, enabling QMix to remotely access Virtual StudioLive to control one or more FireWire-connected StudioLive mixers. As each iPhone connects to the network, its copy of QMix will discover all StudioLive mixers on the network, enabling each musician to quickly and easily create an aux mix that includes all mixer channels. And QMix lets the engineer set permissions so that each iPhone on the network only controls a specified mix.

QMix will be a free download from the Apple App Store and is expected to be available in January 2012.

PreSonus Ships BlueTube DP V2 and TubePre V2 Tube Preamps

Enjoy solid-state clarity or tube warmth with the BlueTube DP V2 dual-path mic/instrument preamp. The solid-state path feeds PreSonus’ Class A XMAX™ mic preamplifier with 80 dB of variable gain-an upgrade from the original BlueTube DP. The tube path features a 12AX7 tube that operates on voltages double that of other preamplifiers in its class, producing lots of headroom and big tone. The Tube Drive enables you to achieve anything from gentle warmth to edgy distortion. You also get 48V phantom power, an 80 Hz high-pass filter, -20 dB pad, and polarity reverse.

With two combo mic/instrument inputs, the half-rackspace BlueTube DP V2 is a great choice for guitars as well as vocals. Singer-songwriters can run their vocal through one channel and their guitar through the other, feeding both to the P.A.-no guitar amp needed. It also serves as a DI box, thanks to balanced XLR and unbalanced ¼” outputs, and is housed in a new, rugged, 1/2U case. Try the BlueTube DP V2 as a front end for a DAW, too. The BlueTube DP V2 is available immediately.

The single-channel TubePre V2 tube preamp is an affordable way to add high quality tube warmth and character to your sound. This new version provides an even wider palette of sound options, and a much more focused tube saturation, than the original TubePre. It has been upgraded to employ PreSonus’ popular XMAX Class A solid-state preamp, which is followed in the signal path by a 12AX7 vacuum-tube stage with Tube Drive tube-saturation control.

Housed in a rugged, 1/3-rackspace case, the TubePre V2 rear panel sports separate unbalanced, ¼” instrument and balanced, XLR mic inputs and unbalanced ¼” and balanced XLR line outputs. The front panel offers controls for gain, 48V phantom power, 80 Hz high-pass filter, and polarity-reverse, as well as a mic/instrument input switch. A lighted VU meter and a clip LED help you keep an eye on your levels. The TubePre V2 is available immediately.

Places are still available in the Music Business Master-Class as advertised last year. The Academy of Sound Engineering, in conjunction with David Chislett and Nick Matzukis, are proud to present the Music Business Master-class (MBM): the one-stop business course for the modern musician trying to make it in the new music industry.

The industry is abuzz with talk of how the music business has changed, how no-one needs a record deal anymore, and how easy it is to do everything yourself as an independent. PreSonus Streams NAMM Show to the World

At this year’s Winter NAMM Convention the PreSonus booth was a non-stop nexus of activity, with live performances, technology demonstrations, showcases, and more. But perhaps the biggest buzz was one most attendees were barely aware of. In a tiny 12 x 6 foot room behind the stage, PreSonus staffers were busy streaming the entire show out to the world.

Winter NAMM is one of the world’s largest and most exciting events for musical instruments and music technology. But while tens of thousands of industry visitors from all corners of the globe converge on the Anaheim Convention Center every year, members of the general public have rarely had an opportunity to get inside the show – until now.

Multiple video feeds, including PTZ camera on the performers and an oversize screen behind the stage, were fed to a Black Magic switcher in the editing suite, where Video Designer / Producer Paul Charbonnet cranked some serious performance out of three computers at once. “The Black Magic system is mixing directly to a Mac Pro, which gives us our primary program,” Charbonnet explains. “Then we’ve got an iMac and MacBook Pro doing multiple duties including rendering, encoding for the Web, capturing for our YouTube and Vimeo channels, monitoring live chat, and more.”

“We’ve got a multitrack audio split feed coming from the stage into our StudioLive 24.4.2 console,” explains Audio Engineer Mat Criddle. “That enables us to deliver separate, simultaneous mixes for FOH and Webcasting.” Criddle also provided monitor mixes back to the performers, who were able to manipulate their mixes using their iPhones via PreSonus’ new QMix™ wireless technology.

“At the same time, we’re also recording a multitrack feed of the live performances directly into StudioOne,” says Criddle. “So any of our performing artists can take their tracks and do a full mix later on, and create a live recording or music video from their performance here at NAMM.”

In addition to the performance camera feeds, Associated Creative Director Cave Daughdrill and Social Media Manager Ryan Roullard were regularly roaming the show floor, camera and wireless mic in hand, conducting interviews with other exhibitors, attendees, and anyone else who might have something interesting to show, say, or play. “In between performances, we’re mixing in a bit of Cave and Ryan’s feed, along with a range of product demos and other content,” says Charbonnet.

Besides roaming the show, Roullard was a full-time presence on the web, blasting out photos and posts to Facebook and Twitter, fielding questions and comments from viewers, and monitoring the Web for relevant info.

And the action didn’t stop after the show closed. At 6PM, the day’s content was uploaded to PreSonus’ LiveStream channel, where viewers from time zones in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere could get a peek. “Over the first two days of the show alone, we edited and uploaded more than 32 videos,” says Charbonnet.

Despite the daunting demands of bringing NAMM to the world, Charbonnet reports that both men and machinery held up to the job. “It was a non-stop gig, but we were pleased to see that everything went off without a hitch,” he says. “It was a real team effort, and we had tons of support from everyone. In the end, it was a great feeling to know we were doing something great for music fans everywhere, and making history at the same time.”

PreSonus VSL Gets Smaart with Leading Sound-System Analysis Tools

PreSonus Mixers Get Smaart with Leading Sound-System Analysis Tools

PreSonus has begun incorporating Rational Acoustics’ highlyregarded Smaart Measurement Technology™ directly into the software used to control its StudioLive digital mixers.

PreSonus’ Virtual StudioLive™ (VSL) remote-control/editor/librarian software will now incorporate Smaart Spectra™ and Smaart Locator™, powerful tools for sound-system analysis and optimization, as part of PreSonus Universal Control 1.6, expected to be available later this spring.

Smaart is not a single technology but an evolved collection of audio measurement tools and techniques. If you’re a live sound engineer or sound contractor, you’re already aware of Smaart’s reputation as the gold standard of room/sound-system analysis.

Using Smaart technology, users can tap into the power of the StudioLive mixer’s EQ to improve the sound of their P.A. system. With Smaart-enhanced VSL, users can view the spectral content of their mix in real time, and easily make changes. Clicking on the Graphic Equalizer button in Universal Control 1.6, Smaart Spectra’s Real Time Analyzer activates Spectrograph’s algorithms, displaying the spectral content of whatever is routed though a particular graphic EQ. Users can activate a Real Time Analyzer, much like the plug-in used in PreSonus’ Studio One 2.

Even better is the Smaart Spectra Spectrograph display itself, which can help to precisely identify nasty feedback frequencies, enabling even less experienced users to easily tune their P.A. speakers to the room. Smaart Spectra graphs a continuous series of spectrum measurements, showing frequency on one axis, time on another, and level indicated by colors – making it particularly useful for quickly identifying feedback frequencies, which can be easily addressed using StudioLive GEQs.

“This is just the start of a beautiful relationship – PreSonus products are about to get a lot Smaarter,” says PreSonus Chief Technology Officer Bob Tudor. ”This is the real thing, trusted by acousticians and live-sound engineers the world over. We’re thrilled to be incorporating Smaart Spectra and Smaart Locator into Virtual StudioLive.”

The new four-channel controller comes with over 200 assignable parameters.

The Reloop RMP-2.5 Alpha is the latest member of Reloop’s RMP-series and a true cross media player with additional MIDI function. Besides playing current audio formats such as WAV and MP3 from CD, CD-R, memory stick or hard disk drive, it is also possible to control any MIDI compatible DJ software (for example Traktor) thanks to the RMP-2.5′s full MIDI compatibility. Also you can use the Data Base Builder software to analyse the desired USB drives, thus obtaining quicker and filtered results. Another very convenient feature is the Next Track function: During playback you can already select the next track. As combination of CD/MP3 player, USB mass storage media player and MIDI software controller, the Reloop RMP-2.5 Alpha is up to all requirements of modern DJ business.

Korg Releases Two New monotrons

Korg puts the thrill of the analog synthesizer into everyone’s hands. Announcing the new monotron DUO & monotron DELAY

Go Anywhere Analog: That was the theme behind the remarkable battery-powered and palm-sized analog synthesizer that Korg dubbed the monotron. Now the powerful and fun-to-play monotron is joined by two new siblings. The Dual Oscillator monotron DUO offers X-MOD capabilities for generating even more extreme sounds. The monotron DELAY features a Space Delay that can produce intense, analog-like echo effects. Each is played from a ribbon controller keyboard with newly added features. The monotron’s simple operation and ease of use (5 knobs and 1 switch) is alive and well, inviting hours of enjoyment and musical exploration.

Casual users and gadget mavens will quickly enjoy performing melodies, DJs can create dazzling effects on stage, while established players can add analog muscle to their performance – the possibilities are virtually unlimited. Grab yourself a monotron, monotron DUO, or monotron DELAY, and get in touch with the exciting world of analog synths.

monotron DUO

Offering two oscillators, the monotron DUO adds an extra dimension, delivering an even more extreme sound. Tune the oscillators in unison for a rich, thick, analog tone.

monotron DELAY

A good delay was an essential part of the classic analog synthesizer sound. More often than not, that delay came from a tape-style echo machine until affordable digital delays were created. The monotron DELAY is an analog synthesizer optimized for sound effects. In addition to its analog oscillator, filter, and LFO, it also provides a Space Delay that’s indispensible for swooping, cosmic sounds.

Vestax VCI-400

Vestax have been in the DJ Midi Controller game for some time. In fact that’s an under-statement! It’s fair to say that Vestax were the early pioneers of professional DJ controllers, their VCI-100 setting the benchmark for what has now become the ubiquitous standard in digital deejaying.

Of course today every manufacturer of DJ gear has a range of controllers and they are all forced to compete in what is a fairly restrictive market. I say restrictive because there really is only so much a manufacturer can do to separate his product from the competition since at the heart of all the functionality is the DJ software that is being controlled. Which is what makes the VCI-400 a fascinating new addition to this somewhat saturated market.

What is it?

Building on the solid foundation and indeed the legacy of the VCI-100, the concept behind the new VCI-400 is a controller with no boundaries. Basically this means that any software with a midi learn function can be controlled via this device. The product does however still come bundled with a special 4 deck version of Virtual DJ LE.

Looking closely at the controller you may notice that only the obvious non-negotiable controls, buttons, sliders and rotaries are labelled, the rest being left blank. This is deliberate by Vestax as the controller is designed to cater for every DJ program currently available. Included in the package are blank overlays which fit neatly over the controls that can be custom assigned by you, depending on what you want to do.

If this sounds like too much work, do not fret; a quick pop over to vestax.com and you’ll find several pre-designed overlays ready to download too, so should you already have a program like Traktor 2 for example, you can simply download this and place over the controller. A Traktor 2 tsi file (a file that hosts specific mapping and is transportable between users) is also available for download should you wish to simply load and play. Using midi learn and programming one’s own settings may only appeal to advanced users looking for some personal customisation.

Quality Control

Whilst Vestax documentation is famously cryptic at the best of times the build quality of their products is undisputedly good. The VCI-400 is no exception and is certainly in the top echelon of solidly built, professional controllers. From the torque adjustable and sensitivity controlled jog-wheels (I love the simulated vinyl grooves on their platters) to the large red aluminium filter knobs, the smooth sliders (tempo and channel) and the responsive rubberised buttons both in the transport and sample/hot cue section, the VCI-400 certainly looks the part for the professional digital DJ.

Ergonomically I really like the layout too. It is true that one can only do so much with the layout; each device will always need a mixer section, transport section, jog-wheels etc but where to place some key controls will definitely influence how much one uses the extra features digital deejaying affords one such as looping, hot cues and FX. The VCI-400 scores big in this department.

In Use

I tested the VCI-400 with 3 applications; the bundled 4 deck Virtual DJ software which worked straight out the box and is easy enough to operate. Although it is a 4 deck version – and the VCI-400 includes 4 channel sliders, it is still an LE revision so don’t expect all the bells and whistles to be in the software.

I also tested it with my own Traktor 2, configuring it for 2-channels plus sample decks. The downloadable tsi file works perfectly despite one small idiosyncrasy where one has to set the in-port and out-port manually in the Controller Manager to get a response from the unit but once this is done, its plain sailing. I also did some basic mapping in Ableton Live 8 just to see the potential of having a ‘blank canvass’ type controller at one’s disposal.

Verdict

Whilst most will want instant gratification with the device auto-mapped to your DJ software, the added benefit of quick and easy midi mapping for programs like Ableton or to simply customize one’s own DJ software integration does add that extra something to the VCI-400. The build-quality, layout and functionality is indisputably good making this new controller a very good prospect alongside the other professional DJ controllers available today.

This is not the end, to paraphrase Winston Churchill, not even the beginning of the end of the creative process, but rather the end of the beginning, Once the initial creative process has been completed the avid mixologist will find that he or she is mixing as they progress and often the very nature of the piece of music that they are sculpting will change as it progresses so that by the time that the track is finished all that remains is some fine tuning.

In the end mixing perfectly illustrates the 80/20 rule, the final 20% that is required to achieve greatness will entail 80% of the work. EQ here, a bit of compression there and lots of small tweaks will make those big differences to the final result, it’s all about balance and harmony.

One of the underlying guiding principles of computer aided audio mixing for the electronic musician is that there are no free rides when it comes to the search for that perfect combination of sound, so think carefully before you tweak, listen to the different results and keep searching for that perfect Zen moment when all the elements are in harmony, don’t over think, keep in mind that this is the search for a Yin and Yang of perfect creative balance. Trust your ears, if it sounds bad it probably is, if it sounds good, then step back and carefully consider whether extra effort is going to pay dividends or only muddy the purity of the result.

If you want to learn more and get an in depth idea and understanding of the various elements and steps required to make your music into an accurate reflection of your creative ethos, then visit the Soundselect web site and download the free Ebook that will provide you with all the tools that you need to turn your DAW into the perfect harmonic instrument, whatever style of music you prefer.

Tricks from the Pro’s 10: Your Soldering Iron May Not Help

Salutations and greetings BPMings! Let’s face it; the world is no good when people want to keep things to themselves. Sharing is caring. At least when it comes to the audio software community, most have opened up their world of wonders to as many different platforms as possible. You may be working on a synth/sampler program such as FL Studio, Reason, Ableton Live, and even the latest Sibelius. All these come with a virtual audio and MIDI router, in the form of something called ReWire. ReWire was developed by Propellerhead for the Rebirth program but has subsequently become a standard.

ReWire allows you to take an audio signal from one program and send it to an audio input of another program. Not only does it do this in audio, but it has similar functionality for MIDI channels. Commonly, this is used when you are working with a host platform such as Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Nuendo Adobe Audition, where you may want to take MIDI to the synth/sampler and then take that audio back into your host program or another synth/sampler program. As long as it has ReWire compatibility and audio/MIDI inputs and outputs, you should be able to get signals from one program into another without too much hassle. The two programs then synchronise with each other and your playback acts as though it is one program.

Here’s how it works: firstly you need to understand that ReWire acts where one program is the host (your general digital audio/MIDI editor) and the other the slave. The slave will pass its audio to the host program, and the host MIDI to the slave. So, start the host program first (very important) and then the slave program, which should indicate it is running in ReWire slave mode. After this, you’ll need to load up an audio or auxiliary track in the host program and insert the ReWire plugin on it. Enable the “record-ready” button (if its an audio track) and if you play something from the ReWire slave you should hear the audio coming from the host’s audio/aux track.

Routing MIDI is similar; create the virtual instrument you want to control within the slave program then create a MIDI track in the host. Route this MIDI track via its MIDI In port to the instrument within the slave – it should pop up as a new MIDI channel in the selection menu. Record enable this MIDI track and you will be able to play the slave’s virtual instrument with the host’s MIDI track. ReWire that instrument’s audio into the host and you now have an endless amount of possibilities for recording via a multitude of music creation programs!

Play long and prosper!

Resistance to better sound is futile!

All buttons are backlit with high-intensity LEDs, and along with the built-in LED Meter input faders, the VCI-400 provides excellent visual support for DJs in any environment.

CLEAR DYNAMIC SOUND

The sound quality of a DJ controller is determined by its D/A conversion capability. There were no compromises when Vestax designed the integrated audio interface, which uses a studio-grade asynchronous USB streaming system to provide low-latency, bit-perfect audio at 24-bit / 48 kHz resolution. This advanced audio system combines a dual-core digital processor with carefully selected analog components, to deliver a clear and powerful sound. CUSTOMIZE YOUR CONTROLS

The biggest advantage of using a MIDI controller to DJ is regardless its compact size, having all necessary controls in one unit and being able to transport/ play all your songs from a laptop. But the VCI-400 brings you another advantage that is often overlooked: the great ability to customize how the controller works with software. The customize capability of the VCI-400 is nothing like any other and provides options that will spark your imagination. The Vestax VCI-400 works with any DJ software that has a MIDI learn function. DJ Set-up for your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad

Turn your mobile devices into a complete DJ setup and hit the road with the new Red Bull BPM range of apps for your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Whether you’re a professional DJ spinning at a club or an amateur mixing music in your bedroom, the range of Red Bull BPM Player apps can put a complete mobile DJ booth in your pocket. Quick to install and easy to understand, the apps are compatible with a wide range of sound formats. You can use it on its own and even in harmony with a traditional DJ setup – just add an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

The Red Bull BPM applications have been developed over the past 12 months in partnership with Stereomusik Systems in Essen, Germany. The range of brand-new Red Bull DJ applications include a handy customizable player, built-in effects engine, Vinyl Vision, iTunes tag management, iTunes library usage, built-in virtual audio mixer, zero latency monitoring and two independent stereo outputs on WLAN.

Never miss a beat

Using mobile devices as the base for a DJ set-up poses a unique problem but we’ve found an ingenious solution. An iPod touch, iPhone or iPad only has one stereo output, so how can you listen to the next track before you cue it up? Red Bull BPM apps overcome this limitation by offering a special audio SPLIT CABLE ADAPTER. If you are a pro DJ then switch your app to Classic Club mode to use two devices as two separate decks, connected to a hardware mixer. Another option is to get the MasterOut app which provides you with a latency free stereo output for monitoring.

A new compact controller with form, the DDJ-ERGO-V for Virtual DJ

A new addition to the DJ controller range, the DDJ-ERGO-V. This unique, design-led controller places emphasis on the DJing experience, combined with instinctive operability of the included Virtual DJ Limited Edition software from Atomix Productions.

The DDJ-ERGO-V brings simplicity into both setup and performance, without compromising sound quality or features. Portable dimensions and sharp styling are complemented by a single bus powered cable connection to your laptop.

Pulse Control uses lights to highlight what features are in play, how accurate your beat matching is and which track is loaded. All major controls and effects are intuitively positioned and ready on the first press of a button. Quick access features include four-deck control, filters, FX, Hot Cues and sample banks with loop sampling too. Features you may not expect at this price point, such as high quality audio circuitry from the Pioneer professional mixer range and dual positioning options, mean the DDJ-ERGO-V will have wide appeal.

The DDJ-ERGO-V comes bundled with Atomix Productions Virtual DJ Limited Edition, which is ready to use straight from the box. Packed with features that even top of the range software can’t boast, Virtual DJ LE lets DJs scratch, mix and add modern remix effects to your music and video sets without paying for an upgrade. On top of the four decks with autosync, you get instant access to eight samples, smart loops and much more. Automatic beatgrids, high-detail waveforms and a software interface that matches the controller will make it easy to keep track of the mix.

A new approach to the DDJ-ERGO-V adds a visual dimension to DJing. Pulse Control uses lights to highlight what features are in play, how accurate your beat matching is and which track is loaded.

The DDJ-ERGO-V suggested retail price is £429 inclusive of VAT.

Plentiful dedicated knobs and buttons for all your favourite functions

Key features

Bundled with Virtual DJ LE for DJing right out of the box

The DDJ-ERGO comes packaged with Atomix Productions’ Virtual DJ Limited Edition with a Pioneer original GUI and a broad range of performance functions straight from the controller.

The DDJ-ERGO boasts plentiful dedicated knobs and buttons for all your favourite functions, including four-deck mixing, filters, sample decks and loop recording. This makes it possible to access all the most important controls instantly without pressing the Shift button, which is only required for DJs looking for even more advanced performance features and settings.

Plus the MIDI output makes the DDJ-ERGO compatible with most other DJ software on the market, Traktor users can apply the included TSI settings file to control their favourite software.

NEW! Pulse control adds a visual dimension for precision performance

The newly developed Pulse Control uses light to give a visual representation of pitch, beat, effects and which decks are in use. Built-in LEDs enhance your mixing precision and add a new dimension to the art of DJing. The main features of Pulse Control include:

Mix Pulse: A blue LED on the jog wheel shows how close the phase of the mix is during a mix. The bigger the difference in pitch, the weaker the light. The closer the match, the more intense the light shines.

Beat Pulse: LEDs in the channel faders match the beat of the track in play. Plus the strength of the light reflects output levels, so you always know if a track is still in the mix.

Launch Pulse: A red light travels from the Load button towards the Jog Wheel to indicate when a track has been loaded.

FX Pulse: Various light patterns on the Jog Wheel clearly show which FX DJs have applied.

Boasts features from Pioneer’s pro range for top quality sound and ease of operability

The DDJ-ERGO boasts many features that are unusual at this price point, including the 115mm Jog Wheel from the Pioneer pro-DJ range. The controller has also inherited the same layout as the popular DDJ-T1 and DDJ-S1 controllers. Plus the controller employs the same audio circuitry as Pioneer’s professional mixers for the master out terminal, ensuring a clear, powerful reproduction with no sound degradation.

Innovative laptop integration keeps screen in DJs’ line of sight at all times

Pioneer’s laptop dock design enabled DJs to place laptop keyboards underneath the controller to use as little space as possible and keep the screen in view while using the controls. The DDJ-ERGO can also be adapted to sitting or standing positions; simply set the controller flat on any surface by unscrewing the removable legs.

Completely USB-powered for an even easier set up

The DDJ-ERGO is fully operational from a USB bus through your computer, eliminating the need for an external power supply. There LEDs shine bright and the audio output levels are powerful and loud with no compromise.

Unique “Delight” design concept suits every environment

The controller’s eye-catching design features a black top panel and black and silver half-tone Jog Wheel. With it’s rounded edges and white side panel. The DDJ-ERGO looks good in the studio, the booth or the bedroom.

Other features:

Line in and MIC input

The industry’s first lock mechanism, “P-LOCK Fader Cap”, is equipped on the cross-fader and each channel fader to prevent fader caps from slipping during performance.

Built-in audio interface.

PreSonus Announces Studio One Version 2—a Stunning Upgrade!

PreSonus announces version 2 of Studio One, its groundbreaking, easy-to-use DAW for Mac OS X® (Snow Leopard and Lion) and Windows® XP/Vista/7 (and soon, Windows 8). Version 2 offers more than 100 new features and enhancements, including fresh takes on multitrack comping, multitrack MIDI editing, transient detection and editing with groove extraction, and Folder Tracks. And only Studio One 2 offers exclusive, tightly integrated Melodyne pitch correction. Yet the software is still uncluttered and easy to use.

Here are some of the important new features in Studio One 2:

Integrated Melodyne pitch correction. Studio One 2 seamlessly integrates Celemony’s Melodyne so tightly that, for practical purposes, Melodyne is simply a part of Studio One. You hear your edits in context with the rest of the arrangement, and when finished editing, render the audio in place—no track transfers or manual rendering! Furthermore, edits made in the arrangement are seamlessly synced in Melodyne. Want to go back to where you were? It takes one click. No other DAW can do this. Melodyne Essentials comes with Studio One Professional 2; Studio One Artist 2 and Producer 2 come with a Melodyne trial version.

Transient detection, editing, and groove extraction. Sure, you can do transient detection and editing in other DAWs—but it can be slow and painful. In Studio One, you simply select an audio event and press Q to quantize. Groove extraction is as simple as drag-and-drop; extract a groove from any audio and apply it to any other audio in seconds!

Multitrack comping done right. Single and multitrack comping are quick and easy in Studio One—and faster than with most DAWs! No tool-switching is needed, and crossfading between takes is automated, although you can edit the fades. Auditioning takes is as simple as holding Alt and clicking on a take.

Find it quickly. Studio One’s Browser offers quick access to instruments, effects, sounds, files, and more. In version 2, you can search within any location in the Browser, making it even faster and easier to find the resources you want.

Organize your tracks. Organizing related tracks and working with them as a group is a breeze with Folder Tracks. Group and bus your Folder Tracks with the click of a button—an exclusive Studio One feature.

Edit multiple MIDI tracks simultaneously. Now you can view and edit more than one instrument track at a time in the Music Editor, including editing multiple parts on different Tracks at once.

A great plug-in collection just got better. Studio One’s Native Effects plug-ins have drawn rave reviews from the media. Now they’re even better. The Ampire guitar-amp modeler is now Ampire XT and features new amp models, a new convolution-based cabinet-modeling section and an effects section. And the new OpenAIR convolution reverb delivers ultra-realistic reverberation based on real spaces and classic hardware reverbs. To top it off, with the new IR Maker, you can capture your own impulse responses.

Enhanced mastering with Studio One Professional. No other DAW offers a truly integrated mastering suite comparable to the Project page in Studio One Professional. To its already extensive list of mastering and distribution features, Version 2 adds DDP Export, PQ editing, and higher-quality sample-rate conversion.

PreSonus now offers three versions of Studio One 2: Artist, Producer, and Professional. Studio One Artist delivers all of the core audio and MIDI recording and editing features, plus 26 32-bit effects plug-ins and 4 virtual instruments, and there is no limit on track count and plug-in instantiations. Studio One Producer includes everything in Studio One Artist and adds support for ReWire and AU/VST plug-ins, MP3 import and export, and additional third-party content.

Studio One Professional has everything in Studio One Artist and Producer and adds the Project page, an integrated mastering solution; fully licensed Melodyne Essential pitch correction; SoundCloud™ support; Red Book CD burning; video playback and sync; and five more Native Effects plug-ins.

Studio One 2 is expected to ship on November 1, 2011.

Beatport Emulator Winner Accepts Prize at PLASA Show 2011

SmithsonMartin Inc. in partnership with Beatport LLC have given 10 lucky winners free license for the Emulator multi-touch midi software. The promotion, run in late summer, also gave one winner the opportunity to contribute his or her own setlist to the Beatport Charts. The winner was announced and received his prize, one full 32″ Emulator Dual View Multi-Touch DJ System, at this year’s Professional Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA) Show held at Earls Court in London, UK.

The winner of the 32″ Dual view system is Damion Burbank, a native of London and one hell of a great DJ” said Alan Smithson, CEO of SmithsonMartin (the makers of Emulator). “I am thrilled that Damion won this prize because he is a hard working DJ and is very good in what he does and humble at the same time. You will see him rocking the Emulator in London clubs soon.”

The Modular version of the multi-touch midi control software will be released at the BPM DJ Show October 1-3, 2011. Tech News: Studio Gear – Event 20/20 BAS V3 the return of Big Ass Sound!

Event 20/20 BAS V3 the return of Big Ass Sound!

Exquisite definition with loads of crisp power. The best just got better!

What Is It?

The Event 20/20 BAS V3 is the third incarnation of one of the most universally acclaimed studio monitors available. The very first pair of 20/20′s were released back in 1995 and were handed over to Francis Buckley who’s first project on them was to mix Quincy Jones’ Q’s Jook Joint for which he won a Grammy Award for ‘Best Engineered Album’.

Fifteen years and three versions later the engineers at Event still try and remain true to the original 20/20′s character and tone but also draw a lot of the technology and innovation from the critically acclaimed Opals. So while the transducer design and cabinet volume have remained unchanged the components themselves have seen a couple of upgrades.

In case you were wondering what the bas acronym stands for, its bi-amplified system and refers to the Class AB amplifiers from the Opal series for the tweeter and woofer that provide up to 250 watts of burst power with less than .01% Total Harmonic Distortion. This more than doubles the power of the original 20/20′s while halving the THD! Couple that with some mods in the cabinet bracing and construction and you have a monitor with the same feel and tone of the originals but with more oomph, less distortion and exquisite definition. A very potent combination when you need accuracy for mixing, mastering and recording.

Inputs for the 20/20 BAS V3′s are via unbalanced RCA or balanced XLR, but we all know exactly which of those inputs most of us are going to use. Rounding out the specs for those that like the numbers, the frequency response is an impressive 35Hz to 20KHz and they peak at around 108 dB SPL.

Who Should Own One?

I find it hard to think of any reason why someone taking their craft seriously would overlook a pair of the 20/20 BAS V3′s. In a price to performance comparison it would be a very steep gradient leaning towards the performance aspect while still pointing to real value for money. The 20/20′s have always carried the reputation as a reference monitor that manages to bridge that tricky gap between making something that sounds amazing in the studio and will still sound great on your TV, headphones or car system and the V3′s are no different. These are the type of monitors that friends will start calling you regularly to “check” their mixes on.

The Verdict

I have been lucky to see and hear the insides of quite a few studios and it’s a glowing testament to Event’s calibre that a fair stack of them have a pair of 20/20′s filling the hallowed centre position. Putting them through their paces in my home studio revealed some amazing details in CD’s and tracks that I thought I knew well and some disconcerting holes in my own productions. While the response is flat, uncoloured and accurate they are also amazingly detailed. The stereo imaging was incredible and really hard to convey using words; they have to be heard to be believed.

But what I really liked was that they still had the feel of the 20/20′s that I have heard so many times before. The bass is the most noticeable improvement though, not just in its volume but also in the definition available at those all too tricky low end frequencies. It’s a comfortable experience listening to the 20/20′s recreate so many of my favourite CD’s with a lot less ear fatigue than I experience with my current monitor setup and really gives you a deeper and more technical understanding of what the producer was trying to achieve in both recorded, and live pieces of music.

To sum up, the Event 20/20 BAS V3′s are utterly amazing and just spending a short time with them has really given me a deeper insight into sound and music that I thought I knew, imagine what they could do for you?

Watch some of the most influential producers, engineers and DJ’s talk about the new 20/20 BAS monitors.

The Rack is United Inside Reason 6

Reason version 6 is coming this October The rack in Reason 6 will be united, bringing over all the features from Record – audio recording, the Neptune pitch corrector/voice synth, the large format mixer with our classic modeled EQ and dynamics on every channel, and the oh so lovely Master Bus Compressor. In addition, however, they are adding three new rack devices which share a common goal: Creative use of effects.

The Echo is an advanced stereo echo bringing together the brilliance of modern delays with the organic sounds of analog circuitry and old-school tape machines. The Echo is equal parts pristine stereo delay, sound sculpturing toolbox, and playable performance effect.

Pulveriser puts crunchy compression, dirty distortion, a multimode filter and flexible modulation in a single, sound-crunching effect.

Alligator is a three band pattern-based gate effect that turns bland pads into rhythmic textures, radically twists your loops, and tweak boring beats into blockrocking breaks.

Tech News: Vestax PAD-One

The Vestax PAD-One is a solid robust MIDI pad controller, compatible with various DJ & DAW software and can be used to control any kind of MIDI device, including synthesizers, samplers, drum machines, and electronic drums. The aluminium chassis will never warp or crack, ensuring you long life durability and stability.

The PAD-One can individually assign pads on the fly, and shows you each pads MIDI value on the 7 seg indicator. Compact, solid and reliable, the PAD One is the ideal addition to your DJ arsenal. The pads not only send out velocity sensitive notes but they also send out a single after touch CC with further pressure on the pad. Why should you care? It gives triggering effects and notes more character with analogue expression right on your button. Imagine:

turning on an effect with the button and then modulating the value with after touch.

triggering a cue point and then bending the key parameter for a pitch bend.

And it has an XY Pad too which is really responsive and customizable. It has a nice firm feel, as opposed to some X/Y pads which truly feel very flimsy.

There is a roll feature for the buttons that allows for fast triggering of notes in automatic succession. The tempo of the roll is controlled by the TAP button and the rate is controlled by the X/Y pad. One possible use case is:

triggering cue points in rapid succession in a true roll style drum build.

This is a very nifty device. Compact and robust, expect to see these quite a lot this summer, used by DJ’s and producers alike.

Marc Romboy Playing 3 Exclusive European shows, showcasing Smithson-Martin’s Emulator

Marc Romboy will be playing three exclusive European shows to showcase Smithson Martin’s Emulator. This revolutionary piece of technology for DJs and producers melds midi-based software with touch-screen hardware with stunning results. He is the first DJ ever to perform with the latest Emulator software, and these dates are the first opportunity to catch him in action. To give a hint of what’s to be expected, you can check this amazing video trailer.

The tour begins in London with a date at Ministry of Sound on 13th August. Second stop is Bloom Club in Wuppertal, Germany on 19/08 and he finishes up at Studio 80 in Amsterdam on 26/08. The final stop includes an Emulator workshop run by Romboy himself, which will give professionals and aspiring artists a chance to try the kit and learn from a true expert.

Emulator is ‘the world’s first and only fully customizable, multi-touch software for professional DJs and music producers.’ Creators Smithson Martin are a software development company with a focus on DJ technology, and this is their flagship development. The company was founded by two veteran DJs, Alan Smithson (Canada) and Pablo Martin (Argentina) who share a passion for music, DJing and technology.

During the shows Romboy will be using the state-of-the-art DJ tool dual view multi-touch system. This large-scale interface, also available from Smithson Martin, shows just what is possible when Emulator becomes part of the performance. The DJ becomes part of the light show as the crowd witnesses their every move, giving the performer a new and exciting way to communicate with the audience.

Systematic label head and DJ/producer Marc Romboy was a natural choice for raising the profile of the software. He loves ‘to DJ all over the world because he likes the way everybody understands and lives the same, universal language of techno and house music.’ A true internationalist, he regularly appears at clubs including The Rex in Paris, Fabric and Ministry Of Sound in London and Berghain in Berlin. Known as an artist who constantly seeks to change and evolve his style, the opportunity to experiment with new technology and new ways to perform was too good for him to pass up.

20/20 BAS – The Return Of Big Ass Sound!

The Event 20/20BAS studio monitor started an industry revolution in the mid 1990s. Never before had such transparency and definition been made available to such a wide range of artists and engineers. Since that time the 20/20s have gone down in history as a cult speaker, one that many internationally-recognised engineers, producers and musicians still swear by and use as their go-to speaker to this day.

Now it’s back.

By combining the original tone and character that made the original 20/20 a standard in studios the world over with modern manufacturing processing, and leveraging technology direct from Event’s flagship Opal monitor, the 20/20 BAS is set to revolutionise the way you hear your mix.

Don’t take our word for it – request a demonstration at your local dealer now.

“The one thing I always liked about the 20/20s was if you can get it sounding good on those speakers it will sound good on a variety of speakers. It’ll sound good on the TV, sound good in the car, sound good on headphones.”

Fredwreck

“The low frequency amp can deliver up to 250w of peak power into the woofer. This gives you the BOOM… definition in the bottom end that you’re looking for.”

Marcelo Vercelli

Director of Engineering, Event Electronics

Tech News: Tricks from the Pro’s: So, Sir, is it 50 Hz or 75 Hz today?

The trick to EQ is to first get the sounds you are working with right. For electronic sounds this is relatively easy because no one really knows what they are meant to sound like anyway, but for live productions this all depends on the equipment you have and where you record. The sound should be pretty good on its own already and recorded so that certain “unfixable” problems are avoided. A sound that is dull and booming may never come right and always sound a little cheap.

It is important to understand the frequency spectrum and learn what each part of the spectrum offers for different sounds:

Understanding the sound you are working with in this spectrum can guide your EQ choices. Every sound may have a characteristic which falls into the spectrum and may need to be emphasised or cut. Certain sounds have more of one part of the spectrum than another. Bass sounds, for example, will have far more emphasis on lower mids and down. I say “emphasis” because the bass sound may have frequencies all the way up to the highs, but these only add to the sound and not the main part of it.

Generally, in a record-ing environment you will want to “EQ” the sound by moving the mic around and doing some general EQ changes to record. Then, you will want to balance the sounds in the mix by “keeping” the frequencies you want and removing those you don’t. This is called subtractive EQ, where you only reduce the volume of certain frequencies. Additive EQ is just the opposite. Cutting away sounds is easier on the ear than boosting frequencies, but for a little brittleness additive EQ is fine.

I often cut away what I don’t want in the lower mids to bass and add some clarity in the upper mids and presence bands if the sound is indistinct. That said this principles can also be applied in micro amounts. This is important when working with similar frequency sounds. You’ll want to remove frequencies in one sound while leaving or boosting them in another.

A trick to help find what this may be is to cut the sound, say the kick, with a very tight notch filter and sweep around the bass band until you find that the “thump” of the kick disappears. This may be at 120 Hz, for example. Reset the EQ on the kick and then cut this frequency out of the bass guitar with a mild notch filter around 3 to 6 dB. Bearing in mind that the bass guitar can mask this frequency, the kick and bass will now fit around each other better with a warm surrounding bass and a nice thump from the kick.

This concept can be applied to the lower mids allowing clarity from your bass guitar. You can do this all the way through the spectrum. The more sounds you add the more complex it gets – that’s why arranging instruments for use in the spectrum helps your mix incredibly.

Other general tips for improving clarity is to apply high pass filters with a low Q (bandwidth) on all sounds which are not obviously part of the bass spectrum. Things like vocals, piano, brass and general sounds which have their fundamental frequency (their pitch range) above the lower mids. This lets the bass and sub bands have more space. Doing a general lower to upper mid cut with a broad Q on background sounds can help them take less dominance. Similarly pushing the mids can help lost sounds sound bigger provided they don’t muddy the mix. Adding a gentle rise with a mild Q at 6 kHz on most sounds help get them to cut through.

At the end of the day there is no silver bullet for EQ, train your ears to know why you are pushing the buttons you are. Good luck!

Play long and prosper!

Resistance to better sound is futile!

Tech News: Setting up Audio Effects Racks And Macro Controls

Last month we looked at setting up your tracks for DJ’ing in Live. This time I would like to show you how to build your own audio effect racks and macros on every channel.

Live has some powerful inbuilt audio effects which are great tools for any live performance. Add to that the wonderful world of VST effects out there and you have some potent weapons to really F***K up your sound (in the best possible way ;) . Our aim here is to set up a combination of effects and then have their most important parameters controlled by a Macro Control. First let’s look at how to set up an audio effects rack:

First add the audio effects that you might like to use onto a channel in Live. For example, for a dj set, I like to add EQ Three (Ableton’s three channel dj style EQ), an Auto-Filter (for instant hi pass and lo pass filter sweeps), beat repeat (for glitch style effects), Redux (a bit crusher effect) and any combination of delays, reverbs, phasers and flangers. Basically whatever effects work well with the music on that channel.

The next step is to Group these effects into an Audio Effects Rack, making them into one giant effects unit. To do that, select all the relevant effects in the chain using SHIFT and click (or CMD/CTRL A to select All). They should all be highlighted yellow. Right click and select the Group command (CMD/CTRL G is the shortcut).

We now have a giant effects unit that has WAY too many possible options for one person to deal with. So make some Macro Controls.

What the hell is a Macro Control? It is a group of 8 knobs at the beginning of a Rack that allows you to control the most important parameters directly from your MIDI controller, or using a mouse if you’re old school like that.

As soon as you’ve created the Audio Effects rack by Grouping, you will see that a box has been put around all your audio effects, and a device title bar has been created. The button immediately under that device’s on/off button is Show/Hide Macro Controls. Click this button and your Macros Controls will appear.

Let’s use an example of setting up a hi pass filter for Macro Control. Select the Auto-Filter effect, and right click on the filter frequency. From the menu that pops up, select Map to Macro 1.

The Filter frequency is now assigned to Macro 1, meaning that you control it from the Macro Control tab and not on the effect itself. The beauty of this is that you no longer need to go digging for the parameter you want inside an audio effect, it is clearly laid out for you. Right click on Macro Control 1 to rename it and colour it to your taste.

As many effects parameters as you like can be assigned to one Macro. A trick I commonly use is to assign the filter on/off button and the filter frequency to the same Macro. By clicking the green Map Mode button, I can set from which minimum value to which maximum value a parameter will be active. For example this setting below means the effect is off in the 0 position and turns on as soon as I move it the tiniest amount to 1.

This is all the info you need to build your own Macros, allowing you to control a whole range of crazy effects from 8 knobs!
