The Mountain Effect
Holly Jade
I was chatting to a recently-moved-to-Cape-Town-as-well friend of mine a few months ago when it occurred to me, 'I think I know why people in Cape Town are so crazy about living here...' and as if by some South-as-you-can-get-in-Africa-inspired ESP he replied; 'Because there's a fucking mountain.' Beat Banga: Azuhli on his debut album...
Raiko
I first heard an Azuhl dj set way back in '98 or something at the "Real Hip Hop" event at the old Reality venue in downtown Joburg. I remember that set clearly and have been a fan ever since. I enjoyed the way he played the classics mixed in with the joints I had never heard before; something that would influence me when I started dj'ing. A lot has happened since then for this Cape Town Dj, including extensive shows and tours both abroad and locally as dj for renowned Cape Flats crew BVK as well as Local Female wordsmith E.J. Von Lyric. Azuhl is also a founding member of the Turntablist Crew Beat Bangaz along with pioneering Hip Hop heads Ready D, Shamiel X and E-20. We met at a fruit juice bar (we grown like that) and discussed his recently released debut album entitled "African Shockwave".

Here are a few creative heads that have been holding our attention of late.

While a silver-lined cloud embraces Durban's Kwaito exponents, Big Nuz, who walked away with three key awards, house music heads seem uncertain. The big question that looms: Is Kwaito taking over as the possible staple genre of South African popular music again?
